The Museum of the Future is a unique incubator for futuristic innovations and design, currently under construction in Dubai, UAE. It builds on over five years of immersive exploration of the future by the Dubai Future Foundation, the organisation behind many exciting inventions, from the world’s first 3D printed office to the Dubai Blockchain Strategy. Opening in 2019, the Museum will become the world’s largest and most exciting way to discover tomorrow’s trends and opportunities.
A contract to build the Museum of the Future in Dubai was very lucrative. The contract value amounts to 780 million Dirhams, approximately €200 million, or $246 million. BAM, an organisation responsible for the eventual implementation of this project, expects to deliver the museum to Meraas Holding by mid-2019.

BAM has provided a technically compliant submission demonstrating its ability to provide solutions to complicated buildings, using BIM and 3D Modelling. The Museum of the Future is designed by Killa Design, and will be built in part using 3D printing technologies. The structure will change over time to test and reflect the latest advancements in various fields.
The idea for the Museum of the Future is a unique initiative by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum that explores the future of science, technology and innovation and will be located near the Burj Khalifa, Dubai. According to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, “the Museum of the Future will be an incubator for ideas, a driver for innovation, and a destination for inventors and entrepreneurs from around the world”.
Dubai is rightly famous for its modern glass-and-steel skyscrapers, such as the unparalleled Burj Khalifa. Yet no matter how sleek and tall you make it, a skyscraper is still a traditional building form, with its familiar repetitions and verticality. Dubai’s new Museum of the Future, however, takes a groundbreaking approach to architecture and what it means to be a museum.
While there are certainly taller and more expansive buildings, this incredible feat of design, engineering, and construction will rank as one of the most complicated projects ever built. “A building with this complexity has never been done, not with this shape of the facade and the superstructure,” says Derek Bourke, BIM manager for construction firm BAM International.
The museum’s remarkable facade is a perfectly smooth, joint-free assembly of 890 unique stainless steel-and-fiberglass-fused panels fabricated using methods borrowed from the aviation industry. And it is not just an eye-catching shape – it is doing all the real work that any standard building envelope is expected to do.
In addition to becoming a major tourist destination, the Museum will offer advanced courses and specialised workshops, as well as public talks and events. It is intended to offer a platform to demonstrate and test the latest inventions and prototypes from up and coming start-ups and the world’s technology giants. It will also host innovation facilities and design studios with universities, companies and research partners.
It will not be a typical museum, as in a repository of artefacts, but an active place to be filled with innovation facilities and design studios, a repository for ideas not yet conceived. It was important that the design be emblematic of the mission – a dazzling combination of art, engineering, and construction. Art and poetry are manifest in the design, with Arabic calligraphy inscribed onto the exterior that features quotes from the prime minister about the future. But these “inscriptions” are in fact highly engineered windows, a dynamic blend of art and function.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum explains, ”the world is entering a new era of accelerated knowledge and great technological revolutions. The future belongs to those who can imagine it, design it, and execute it. The Museum will become the first major facility in the world dedicated to the trends and technologies of tomorrow, combined with supporting services to help people make their vision a reality.”
In addition to acting as a centre for visitors where they can experience interaction with the world of tomorrow, it will have a major event space, theatre, and partnership labs with the most exciting brands helping to shape the 21st century. Along with the other work of the Dubai Future Foundation, it will offer a platform to demonstrate and test the latest inventions and prototypes, and architecturally, Dubai’s Museum of the Future is shaping up as the world’s most complex building.
